- All puppies are cute! What you want though is a good looking, healthy adult! Here at OMF we aren’t a dog breeder who simply puts random dogs together and hopes for a big litter of puppies to send off at 8 weeks. There is a lot of planning that goes into all the litters we produce. In addition to extensive health screening of our adults, we strive to pair dogs that complement each other. There is a lot of research involved in creating the specific Frenchie look we love. If you’ve looked at adult Frenchies for any amount of time you’ll notice there is a lot of variety in Frenchies today but here we have a preference. Many Frenchies today are way oversized more like a Bulldog or either stringy, more like a Boston with long legs and necks. We've definitely seen a move towards bigger, longer body style Frenchies by many breeders. We expect this comes from a desire to produce bigger litters of more puppies. We like them thick, short, stocky, flat faced, and with lots of wrinkles but not so big we can't easily pick them up.
- We invest in real heath testing before breeding. Genetic tests ($100) that clear a dog from a couple hundred diseases that don't even exist in our specific breed is not health testing or even an indication of health! Before our dogs enter our breeding program they undergo light anesthesia and multiple x-rays to evaluate if their hips, elbows knees and spine are well formed for this breed. Their knees are also checked for luxating patellas (movement in the knee caps). Without x-rays there is no way to be sure a dog's bone and joint structure is not predisposed to develop issues that may require surgery later to repair. We do our best to ensure our puppies come from parents that have good form, structure and function. Although injuries can also cause these issues, we do our best to make sure that our puppies are not born with a contributing factor because their parents had bad joints to begin with. These surgeries can be extremely expensive for families the most common reason Frenchies end up surrendered to rescues. Hip dysplasia and knee issues (unless very severe) can not be seen in a dog's movement until they are older and well past breeding age. No breeder can simply observe and tell you their dog appears to be fine. It's just not that simple. The only way we can be confident we are breeding sound, healthy dogs is to invest in the complete health testing. Don't let anyone tell you a genetic panel is health testing, it's not.
- Our puppies go home already house/potty trained to a litter pan. This makes the transition to outside potty training for their new family so easy. We love this method because it keeps our puppies clean but mainly because it teaches them good habits as little babies that work with their natural instincts (not against them). If you've ever heard friends say a dog they had was so hard to house train, it's often to do with how the breeder trained/raised them as babies. Our puppies are never raised in wire cages on metal grates that ruin their feet and get them used to defecating anywhere. This is a common practice in puppy mills.
- We believe how puppies are raised matters (very much)! Once puppies are born we spend a lot of time with them providing specific stimulations at different developmental milestones to support healthy neurological and social maturing. We purposefully expose puppies to a vast amount of sound protocols so they are not scared or uncomfortable adults (trains, storms, fireworks, vacuum cleaners, etc). One of our goals is to avoid common behavioral issues in dogs that can be impacted by proper puppy development and training.
- Our breeding intention is to improve the overall health of this classic and historic breed. We are NOT focused on producing the even more expensive Frenchie trends or the newest fad colors often seen today. It takes many, many generations of breeding once those Pekinese or Chihuahua genes (or whatever breed is introduced for a new fad) are introduced to get back to a well built and good looking Frenchie. The market today is full of these examples. Introducing these new breeds to create the new fad colored French Bulldog also can create a hot mess regarding health issues by now introducing an entirely new list of health concerns (associated with that other breed) that no one is even looking for.
- Our breeding dogs are also genetically tested with the French Bulldog breed panel diseases: CMR1, DM, HUU, JHC.
- Our babies are raised in a family home environment with children. They are handled and well loved from the minute they are born. They go home well socialized and accustomed to all the sights and sounds in a typical home.
- Puppies are vet examined at birth and wormed at appropriate ages. Around 6-8 weeks they receive another vet health examination, vaccination and fecal exam before going home.
- Families are provided with vet health & vaccine record, AKC parent pedigrees, and a puppy contract.
- All puppies come with 1 year congenital health guarantee (outlined in our puppy contract) .
- Our dogs do not have allergies or require a prescription dog food diet. We would not breed any dog that showed signs of allergies. Special diets can end up costing more than the dog itself over the life of the dog.
- Our prices vary by litter and puppy color but typically range from $4700- $5700 for pet home placement.
